On May 28, 2026, Guimaras State University (GSU), through its Gender and Development (GAD) Office, conducted Building Safe Spaces: Ending Bullying and Harassment at the University Gymnasium, Salvador Campus.
The gathering brought together students, faculty members, and university personnel in a shared undertaking to deepen awareness of bullying, harassment, and the responsibility of fostering an environment rooted in dignity, respect, and mutual accountability.
Opening the program, GAD Director Mrs. Frennie D. Zarate stressed the importance of cultivating spaces where individuals can learn, work, and interact free from intimidation, discrimination, and abuse. She emphasized that creating a safe academic environment requires vigilance and cooperation from every member of the university community.
University President Dr. Lilian Diana B. Parreño followed with a message reaffirming the institution’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of students and employees. She stressed that a learning environment flourishes when respect, empathy, and inclusivity are upheld as shared values rather than mere institutional policies.
The seminar proper was delivered by Atty. Marianne P. Junco, who provided participants with a comprehensive discussion on the legal, ethical, and social dimensions of bullying and harassment. Her presentation shed light on the rights and responsibilities of individuals, the mechanisms available for reporting incidents, and the importance of intervention in preventing harmful behaviors from taking root within educational settings.
Prior to the lecture, GSUSR President Berlyn May Galimba introduced the resource speaker, highlighting the relevance of the discussion amid the evolving challenges faced by students and academic communities.
An open forum facilitated by Dr. Ma. Xy J. Yanguas followed, allowing participants to raise questions, share observations, and seek clarification on issues surrounding campus safety and respectful conduct.
The activity concluded with closing remarks from GAD Coordinator Dr. Sol M. Basañes, who called on participants to carry forward the lessons gained from the seminar and translate them into everyday actions that nurture a more compassionate, respectful, and secure university environment.
