GSU-UTP Collaboration Advances Community-Based Environmental and STEM Education

Guimaras State University (GSU) and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) of Malaysia conducted joint community extension activities on October 21, 2026, combining environmental stewardship with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education through engagements in Brgy. Cabano, San Lorenzo and at Supang National High School.

The University’s Community Extension Services Office (CESO) welcomed 22 UTP student delegates—six female and 16 male participants—accompanied by their teacher-guardian for a day of community-based learning and cross-cultural exchange.

The activities opened with a tree-planting initiative at the GSU Multi-Crop Pond in Barangay Cabano, San Lorenzo. Organized by CESO, the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAgS), and the College of Science and Technology (CST), the undertaking promoted environmental sustainability through a hands-on activity involving visiting students and members of the University community.

GSU President Dr. Lilian Diana B. Parreño personally led the activity alongside CAgS Dean Dr. Rhea Joy D. Flora, campus personnel, and fisheries students. The initiative connected environmental advocacy with community extension, giving participants an opportunity to take part in a shared effort to support ecological stewardship.

The delegation proceeded to Supang National High School for Math Quest: Developing a STEM-Based Mathematics Learning Game, an extension activity organized by CST in collaboration with the UTP student delegates. Designed for the school’s senior high school STEM students, the session used an interactive game format to present mathematical concepts through practical problem-solving and participatory learning.

Beyond its instructional purpose, Math Quest created an avenue for Filipino and Malaysian students to exchange perspectives and engage across cultural contexts. The activity brought mathematics beyond conventional classroom exercises, encouraging learners to approach the subject through collaboration and applied reasoning.

The school-based engagement was conducted with the support of school principal Dr. Collins Natividad and the faculty of Supang National High School. It was facilitated by Prof. Adrian J. Forca, Dean of CST; Dr. Sol M. Basañes, Director of CESO; Mrs. Ana Razel Ramirez, University Extension Specialist V; Dr. Reiner Jun Alminaza, CST faculty member; and the UTP delegation’s teacher-guardian.

The joint activities reflect the role of university extension in translating institutional expertise into community-based learning opportunities. By combining environmental action with STEM instruction, GSU and UTP connected student engagement with practical concerns in sustainability and education.

The collaboration also widened opportunities for future institutional partnerships, with the visit providing a shared setting for academic exchange, youth engagement, and community-oriented initiatives between the two universities.
