Guimaras State University (GSU) participated in the Training of Trainers: Life Skills Enhancement in Drug Education and Prevention for Higher Education conducted from July 21 to 23, 2026, at Sotogrande Iloilo Hotel, Iloilo City. The three-day capacity-building program was spearheaded by the Commission on Higher Education Regional Office VI (CHEDRO VI) in partnership with the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB).
The University was represented by personnel from the Guidance Office, namely Dr. Geraldine Joy Espinosa, University Guidance Counselor and Ms. Merrill Segovia, RPm; and the Information Unit, namely Mr. Mark Laurence Faigones and Mr. James Rojo, who served as the official documentors of the activity. The training likewise convened representatives from public and private higher education institutions across Western Visayas, inspiring a space for advancing preventive drug education initiatives within the higher education sector.
Designed to strengthen the competencies of higher education practitioners, the program stressed the role of life skills education in cultivating informed, resilient, and socially responsible learners. Discussions centered on self-esteem development, effective communication, facilitation techniques, and decision-making skills as essential components of preventive drug education.
Resource speakers from the Dangerous Drugs Board facilitated the training sessions, namely Mr. Michael Miatari, Ms. Jenhmarie Dawn T. Frias, Ms. Lalaine F. Divina, and Ms. Maria Lina G. Reyes. Through interactive workshops and learning engagements, participants were equipped with pedagogical approaches and practical tools for integrating life skills education into institutional programs and student support initiatives.
The activity was graced by Dr. Raul F. Muyong, Director VI of CHEDRO VI, who stressed the importance of strengthening preventive education efforts within higher education institutions as part of a broader commitment to student welfare and holistic development.
