On September 24, 2024, Guimaras State University (GSU) conducted a successful technology training workshop titled “Designing Innovative Solutions: A Hands-on Workshop with Canva” at Zaldivar Elementary School in Buenavista, Guimaras. This initiative is part of GSU’s EmpowerED program, which aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, aiming to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
The workshop aimed to equip teachers with essential design skills using Canva, enabling them to create visually engaging educational materials that enhance learning experiences. Attended by 12 dedicated teachers and staff, the event began with an opening prayer by Mrs. Sharon V. Mandioya and welcome remarks from Dr. Marites I. Habaña, the school’s principal, who underscored the importance of innovative teaching tools in fostering a positive learning environment.
Throughout the session, teachers explored Canva’s features and engaged in personalized projects, such as creating classroom posters, certificates, and handouts. Collaborative group work allowed participants to brainstorm and design subject-specific materials for immediate application in their classrooms. This hands-on experience not only boosted their confidence in using digital design tools but also encouraged them to adopt innovative strategies that enhance student engagement.
Many participants expressed enthusiasm for integrating Canva into their teaching methods, recognizing its potential to enrich their lessons and cater to diverse learning styles. The workshop concluded with a group photo, symbolizing the collaborative spirit and commitment to innovative teaching and learning.
Overall, the session empowered educators to enhance their instructional practices and contribute to the broader goal of providing quality education, in line with SDG 4. GSU remains committed to fostering professional development opportunities that equip teachers with the necessary skills to inspire and engage their students through visually appealing and customized educational resources.
