CAgS Faculty attends the 7th National Congress and 2019 Philippine Agriculturists Summit at PICC, Manila

The faculty of the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAgS) in the persons of Dr. Julius T. Vergara (College Dean) and Prof. Rhea Joy D. Flora (Program Head for BSA) participated in the National Congress and 2019 Philippine Agriculturist’s Summit at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Complex, Pasay, Metro Manila last July 7-11, 2019. The Congress was organized by the Philippine Association of Agriculturists (PAA) Inc. with the Professional Regulations Commission and accredited integrated organizations. This year’s theme of the Congress was “Embracing and Institutionalizing the 4th Agriculture Revolution in the Digital Age”. This was participated by agriculturists from all over the Philippines coming from the different private and government institutions such as local government units, national governments, and state universities and colleges.

The 7th National Congress addressed the major challenges facing the agriculture sector as it transforms into a higher agtech industry or AG 4.0. The 3-day event aimed at providing venue and discussion platform to facilitate an exchange of ideas in addressing these challenges; gaining a better perspective of the marketing initiatives and alliances that are being pursued by farmers and agribusiness entrepreneurs to competitively manage buyers’ evolving needs and wants for agricultural products; exploring the alternative ways of supporting the innovation fields of AG 4.0 for both human food and animal feed; and determining strategic directions to nurture the gains of industry 4.0 through improved governance, better policies, and preparing tomorrow’s workforce. This year’s congress had 4 plenary sessions: (1) Agriculture Feeding the 4th Industrial Revolution; (2) Megatrends Shaping Agribusiness and Food Markets: Challenges and Opportunities; (3) Driving the Innovation Fields AG 4.0; and (4) Nurturing the Gains of AG 4.0.

On the first day (July 8), a pre-Congress session was conducted to provide opportunities to discuss the Philippine Qualifications Framework and continuing professional development concerning agriculturists as professionals as well as progress in the Philippine Agriculturists’ Bill.

Extension Coordinators attended the PASUC VI EMC Training-Workshop on Documentation and Packaging of Best Community Extension Services

BORACAY- The Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC VI) -Extension Managers Council, Incorporated organized a training-workshop on Documentation and Packaging of Best Community Extension Services in which, Guimaras State College sent Extension Coordinators/ Representatives from various degree Programs.

It has been a mandate for all State Universities and Colleges to Extend its services to the Community known as “Extension Services”-Extending New Technologies to the Community that will inspire to improve lives.

FSB: Teaching Demonstration Evaluation

The Faculty Selection Board of the College Evaluates the Teaching Skill of the New Contract of Service Faculty Applicant thru Teaching Demonstration that was held last July 11, 2019. Quality Assurance Office holds ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Auditing Training-Workshop

Aiming to enhance the auditing skills of the Internal Quality Auditors and development of adaptability mechanism by the auditees to ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System, the Quality Assurance Office headed Dr. Mona Liza H. Sollano holds ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Auditing Training-Workshop last July 11-12, 2019 at Guimaras State College-Agri Eco Convention Hall. This was attended by the Heads of Offices with their staff, Deans, Directors, Program Heads and Selected Faculty.

As an output for the said activity, the training-workshop is expected to produce the following:

  • Enhanced ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System IQA’s auditing skills
  • Improved documentation skills of the different staff
  • Excellent services delivered to clients
  • Well organized files in the different offices

Dr. Parreño: Elected as the New PASCHR President

Dr. Lilian Diana B. Parreño – Vice President for Research and Extension was elected as the 2nd PASCHR President last July 5, 2019 held at Divine Word College of San Jose, Occidental Mondoro after she took over Dr. Esmeralda Sanchez, the outgoing president. The oath-taking ceremony of officers was led by Dr. Amarjiva Locha-President SSEASR. The newly elected officers will have three years as their term of office. PASCHR is officially recognized as the National Association of the International Association for History of Religions (IAHR) under the auspices of UNESCO.

7 FACULTY RESEARCHERS ATTENDED THE 5TH PASCHR CONFERENCE

The Philippine Association for the Study of Culture, History and Religion, Inc. (PASCHR) held its 5th PASCHR Conference last July 4-6, 2019   at  San. Jose, Occidental Mindoro hosted by Divine Word College of San Jose and co hosted by Occidental Mindoro State College, International Association for History of Religion, South , Southeast Asian Association for the Study of Culture and Religion and Bureau on Cultural Heritage in which 7 GSC faculty researchers attended the said activity.

          The conference aims to revisit diverse cultures through history and religion, acknowledge and respect different cultures, and provide a platform for research on culture, history and religion.

The conference includes the opening program, plenary speech, parallel session, cultural night and cultural tour.  Dr. Lilian Diana B. Parreno, Prof. Ethel P. Junco, Dr. Julieta G. Infante, Dr. Jocel C. Caber, Dr. Efren S. Telleremo, Instr. Jo Ann T. Gerada and Instr. Rodrigo G. Paglomutan were among the presenters.

GSC WV-FIC Team attended the Training on Food Research Management and Operations

The Guimaras State College – Western Visayas Food Innovation Center,  team headed by Dr. Rogelio T. Artajo (GSC President/FIC – Project Leader) and members Dr. Methusela C. Perrocha (FIC – Center Manager), Instr. Adrian C. Alumbro and Instr. Jessierey Heart C. Gabo (FIC – Food Technologists), Engr. Frenz Rian G. Gal (FIC – Packaging Engineer), Mr. Leo G. Sorongon (FIC – Laboratory Aide), Prof. Antinieta S. Espin (GSC Mosqueda Campus Science Laboratory Coordinator), and Ms. Sheila Mae V. Artajo (Assistant Manager GSC-Agri Eco) attended the “Training on Food Research Management and Operations” last July 2-3, 2019 at Visayas State University, Baybay City, Leyte.  The said activity was funded in partnership with Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST’s) project entitled “Intensifying the Research and Development Activities and Other Services of the Food Innovation Center” which started early this June 2019. The training aims to strengthen the Research and Development activities of the center and enhance the competent technical personnel in order to conduct food product development and provide technical services intended to clients and stakeholders.

GSC Receives the Collective Negotiation Agreement (CNA) from CSC

The Civil Service Commission (CSC) through Dr. Vizur Ty. C. Gaitano (Director- Guimaras Field Office) awarded the Collective Negotation Agreement (CNA) to Guimaras State College.

Collective Negotiation Agreement (CNA) is a contract negotiated between an accredited employee’s organization as the negotiating unit and the employer/management on the terms and conditions of employment and its improvement that are not fixed by law.

Faculty Selection Board Interviews Contract of Service Faculty Applicant

As part of the preparation of the College for the upcoming opening of classes on August 5, 2019, the College conducted a keen and stiff deliberation of Contract of Service Faculty applicant through the Faculty Selection Board (Composed of College Deans, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Human Resource Management Officer) in which, Interview is conducted today, July 5, 2019.

The College received applicants various industries such as business process outsourcing companies, tutorial centers, former Overseas Filipino Workers and Private Practitioners but where motivated to pursue their passion to practice their teaching profession.

After the interview, FSB through the Human Resource Management Office will publish the shortlist of Qualified Contract of Service Faculty Applicants for Teaching Demonstration.

GSC joins ViScience 2019: Visayas Science Festival

The University of the Philippines Visayas in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology  hosted the Aghambayan Visayas entitled, “ ViScience 2019: Visayas Science Festival. This one-day activity highlighted all the accomplishments of technology generators from the different State Univerties and Colleges around Visayas Region supported by DOST. Being one of those DOST-supported SUCs, Guimaras State College was requested to join and showcase its research outputs, brochures and signages which was displayed in a 2m x 2m booth. This was held at the Iloilo Convention Center, Megaworld Blvd., Mandurriao, Iloilo City last June 17, 2019.

          In line with the preparation for the Exhibit, Guimaras State College participants  went to the venue a day before the activity to assemble the booth and to arrange the research outputs particularly those that were generated and produced from the Food Innovation Center, Industrial and Technology Research and Development Center, and from the College of Agricultural Sciences. Few weeks before the scheduled activity, DOST requested the Guimaras State College and other State Universities and Colleges to send their technologies via email as their entry to poster presentation. GSC have sent a total of seven technologies namely: Green Charcoal (College of Agricultural Sciences); Blue-C (Dr. Lilian Diana Parreno); Vacuum Fried Sweet Potato Sticks and Chips ( Food Innovation Center- Mosqueda Campus); and DEEly Products – Batuan, Bignay, Camias and Cranberry Products ( Prof. Ethel P. Junco, Prof. Eric P. Catalan and Ms. Daverose Gallego). All of these GSC technologies were qualified for poster presentation and were featured as Visayas Technologies during the Exhibit.

          On the day of the activity, participants were warmly and sincerely welcomed by Dr. Ricardo P. Babaran, Chancellor of UP Visayas and Dr. Fortunato T. De La Peña, DOST Secretary as they gave their messages. Dr. Rolly G. Fuentes, Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension, UP Visayas gave the Overview of the activity, and was  followed by an Audio Visual Presentation of the featured Technologies of Visayas. Right after the presentation, all of the participants and guest speakers proceed to the most awaited part which was the Opening of the Exhibits. Everyone felt amazed as they  take a look at the different booth displaying their own-developed technologies and  research outputs. Some State Universities and Colleges, including the Guimaras State College offered free-tasting  to the participants especially those who were curious of the  products that were new and unique to their eyesight.  While  some participants went back to the conference hall to continue the discussion, others were left to watch the booth.  The discussion continued with some topics for the the Industry and Private Sectors and the Government Agencies and Academic Institutions. The discussion ended up with a MOA signing for Technology Transfer and with the closing remarks delivered by Dr. Rowena Cristina Guevarra, Undersecretary for Research and Development, DOST.

GSC undergoes Bureau of Immigration School Accreditation

Guimaras State College is one of the Members of the South East Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) – an intergovernmental organization established 1965 assisting the HEIs for student mobility.

Hyping for the Internationalization, Guimaras State College submitted itself to the Bureau of Immigration School Accreditation as part of the preparation of the College to accept Exchange Students.

In the said accreditation, Immigration Personnel of Regional Office VI conducted evaluation of documents in compliance for the accreditation followed by the ocular inspection to the facilities of the college.

The College aims to engage in Student Mobility not later than October this Year

GSC MIS Team attended the Data Privacy Conference 2019

Last May 23-24, Guimaras State College was invited by the National Privacy Commission to attend in the Data Privacy Conference held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City, Manila. This year’s conference has a theme of “Protecting the Digital Filipino: Accountability, Compliance, and Ethics in a data-driven Philippines”.

The purpose of the said event is to inform and educate the public sector about data privacy, data protection and fair information rights and responsibilities in which, it is part of the mandate of the National Privacy Commission under Proclamation No. 527. Further, the organizer aimed at cascading and discussing valuable information and insights necessary for government agencies to help in protecting the rights of the digital Filipino.

As a result of this activity, Guimaras State College is now making its step in compliance of the Requirements for the Data Protection.

GSC Coordinators Attended the National Consultation Meeting on SEAMEO-CHED Academic Mobility: SEA-Polytechnic Network and SEA-Teacher Programme

In preparation for the Upcoming Student Mobility of Guimaras State College, designated Coordinators-Instr. Adrian Forca (CST), Dr. Norie H. Palma (CTE), College Dean – Dr. Simeon Cainday(CST) together with the Directors for External Affairs – Dr. Joel V. Japitana attended the National Consultation Meeting on SEAMEO-CHED Academic Mobility: SEA-Polytechnic Network and SEA-Teacher Programme. In the said meeting, The SEAMEO ( Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization) – CHED Reviewed and evaluated the implementation of the pre-service student teacher exchange as well TVET student internship taking into account best practices and lessons learned; discussed issues and solutions for SEA Teacher and SEA Polytechnic Network policy and program improvement applicable to Philippine higher education institution; and Link the programme with the Immigration policies for accessible participation of Philippines higher education institutions in the two SEAMEO programmes.
