GSU Empowers Women Through Financial Literacy Training, Supporting SDG 5

Guimaras State University (GSU) recently concluded a successful “Financial Literacy Training for Women” on March 20, 2024, at the Agri-Eco Convention Hall. Organized by the university’s Office of Gender and Development, the event aligned with the global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5, which emphasizes gender equality and women’s empowerment. The program was aimed at equipping women with essential financial knowledge and skills, thereby promoting economic empowerment within the GSU community.

The initiative was supported by Dr. Lilian Diana B. Parreño, GSU’s University President, who, through a memorandum, encouraged the attendance of all permanent GSU personnel. She emphasized that while the training targeted women, it was essential for men to attend as well, acknowledging the role they play in supporting the financial well-being of their mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters.

The day-long session covered a range of financial principles, from basic budgeting to investment strategies, helping participants gain a better understanding of managing personal finances effectively. Through interactive workshops, the program underscored the importance of financial independence and provided practical strategies for overcoming common financial challenges.

Dr. Parreño remarked, “Financial literacy is a powerful tool for achieving gender equality, and this training represents a significant step forward in our commitment to empower women within and beyond our university.” The event also highlighted the role of financial knowledge as a cornerstone of sustainable economic empowerment and equality, fostering an environment where women are encouraged to actively participate in and control their financial futures.

The training concluded with positive feedback from participants, who expressed newfound confidence in their financial decision-making abilities. Many attendees voiced their appreciation for GSU’s proactive approach to gender equality, which goes beyond academic support to include essential life skills.

GSU’s initiative not only provided valuable resources for financial empowerment but also reaffirmed its dedication to advancing SDG 5, which seeks to eliminate gender disparities and promote equal opportunities for all. This commitment positions GSU as a champion of inclusive development, fostering a supportive community where both women and men contribute to a balanced and financially informed society.
