In a stride towards enhancing agricultural education and supporting local farmers, the College of Agricultural Sciences at Guimaras State University (GSU), led by Dr. Julius Vergara, held a momentous inauguration ceremony for the new Farmers Information and Technology Services (FITS) Kiosk on August 30, 2023 at the GSU Baterna Campus. Established in collaboration with the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) Region 6, the FITS Kiosk was launched to provide farmers with accessible information and technical support, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education.
The event, hosted at GSU’s Baterna Campus Activity Center, also featured a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing and an orientation for the Techno Gabay Program (TGP), facilitated by Ms. Christine Mae Tubera, Agriculturist I and TGP Focal Person of ATI – RTC VI. The program highlighted GSU’s commitment to integrating practical, community-oriented learning with sustainable agriculture initiatives, aiming to empower local farmers and students alike with vital knowledge and resources.
Distinguished attendees included Dr. Lilian Diana Parreño, University President; Dr. Julieta Infante, Vice President for Research, Extension, Training, and Innovation (VPRETI); Ms. Judy D. Bulquerin, Guimaras FITS Center Manager; and Ms. Caroline Brasileno, Municipal Agriculturist Officer of San Lorenzo, along with faculty members, staff, and students.
The FITS Kiosk stands as a hub for agricultural information, offering access to technology and training programs that address local needs and encourage innovation. Through this initiative, GSU actively supports SDG 4 by promoting inclusive and equitable education, providing students with experiential learning, and extending valuable resources to the broader community.
“Today’s launch signifies more than just the establishment of a service center; it’s a commitment to strengthening agricultural education and enhancing our community’s knowledge resources,” said Dr. Vergara. “We envision this FITS Kiosk as a bridge that connects farmers and students to advanced agricultural practices, creating a ripple effect of learning and sustainability across Guimaras.”
The event concluded with a tour of the FITS Kiosk, underscoring GSU’s role as a partner in fostering agricultural resilience and quality education for sustainable development in the region.
