On August 2-3, 2024, Guimaras State University (GSU) conducted a two-day training workshop on instructional materials development at Nabitasan Integrated School in Iloilo City. This event was part of GSU’s Education Under the Tree: Mentoring the Mentors program, aimed at promoting quality education, as outlined in Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4). The workshop was designed to enhance teachers’ skills in creating engaging and curriculum-aligned educational resources, ultimately contributing to improved learning outcomes for students.
The workshop began with an introduction by Dr. Raymond Peter T. Tolentino, Principal of Nabitasan Integrated School, and an overview from Prof. Rodrigo Paglomutan Jr., GSU Graduate School’s Extension Coordinator. Emphasizing the importance of equipping educators with the necessary tools and skills, Dr. Enriqueta Siva led the initial sessions, covering the fundamentals of instructional materials, including key design principles and curriculum alignment that are crucial for effective teaching and learning.
Participants gained hands-on experience with instructional design models such as ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) and SAM (Successive Approximation Model). These frameworks enabled them to evaluate and align sample materials with lesson plans, reinforcing their ability to deliver quality education that meets diverse learner needs.
Mr. Jayson Arsenio, a graphics designer, enriched the second day with a session on visual design principles and digital tools. He guided teachers on multimedia content creation, including quizzes, games, and simulations, highlighting the role of innovative instructional materials in fostering an engaging learning environment.
The workshop concluded with a showcase of participants’ visual aids and a closing ceremony led by Dr. Margie Y. De La Cruz, Director of the Community Extension Service. Teachers expressed gratitude for the practical training and the expertise of the resource speakers, noting the workshop’s valuable impact on their instructional practices. By enhancing their skills and promoting collaboration, GSU is committed to advancing quality education and empowering teachers to create impactful learning experiences, thus contributing to the broader goals of SDG 4.
