On March 28, 2023, Guimaras State University – College of Science and Technology (GSU-CST) hosted a Data Protection Seminar on Republic Act 10173, also known as the Data Privacy Act of 2012, at East Valencia National High School (EVNHS). This seminar was not only a significant step in enhancing awareness regarding data privacy but also aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which emphasizes the need for inclusive and equitable quality education and the promotion of lifelong learning opportunities for all.
The event attracted 240 participants, including 200 Senior High School learners and 40 teachers and staff. Instr. James Ryan B. Ga and Instr. Loveson C. Gallos led the seminar, briefing attendees on key features of RA 10173, such as the definition of personal information, data privacy principles, the role of data protection officers, and penalties for non-compliance. By incorporating data protection education into the curriculum, GSU-CST actively contributes to fostering informed and responsible citizens equipped to navigate the complexities of data privacy in today’s digital world.

Participants were encouraged to engage with the speakers, raising concerns and questions regarding the implementation of the law. The resource speakers, experts in data privacy and security, shared practical examples and best practices for organizations to comply with the act, reinforcing the seminar’s role in providing quality educational experiences that empower students and educators alike.
The seminar received positive feedback from attendees, who appreciated the informative and engaging content. Many expressed a better understanding of the importance of data privacy and the legal framework surrounding personal information protection. Such initiatives reflect the university’s commitment to enhancing educational quality and ensuring that students are well-informed about their rights and responsibilities in the digital landscape.
Looking ahead, the organizers plan to conduct follow-up activities, including consultation sessions for organizations needing assistance with compliance. They also aim to collaborate with other organizations to further raise awareness about data privacy and the importance of protecting personal information, thereby contributing to a well-rounded education that prepares students for the challenges of the modern world.
Through these efforts, GSU-CST is not only promoting quality education but also nurturing a culture of respect and understanding around data privacy, aligning with the global agenda to ensure inclusive and equitable education for all.
