Guimaras State University-Baterna Campus recently conducted a 10-day Agri-Fishery Skills Training program, running from April 12 to April 26, 2023, aimed at empowering in-school youth and addressing the aging population of farmers in the Philippines. The initiative, led by GSU’s Community Extension Services and the College of Agricultural Sciences, took place at the GSU-Baterna Campus Activity Center.
With recent studies showing that the average age of Filipino farmers is 53, GSU’s program sought to ignite interest in agriculture among the younger generation. The training focused on providing hands-on skills in crop production, livestock rearing, and fish farming, which are crucial for developing sustainable agricultural practices. This training supports the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger by equipping participants with various agri-fishery skills that they can apply in their daily lives at home, in schools, and within their respective communities. The agenda included lessons on organic fertilizer production, business model canvassing, plant care, poultry and livestock management, feed formulation, and bangus (milkfish) deboning.
Each day, participants engaged in lectures by GSU faculty members, followed by practical applications to reinforce key agricultural concepts. Notable sessions included organic vegetable production, crop propagation, and pond management, taught by experts such as Dr. Julius Vergara, Prof. Rhea Joy Flora, and Instr. Erma Conde.
The training reflects GSU’s commitment to fostering agricultural skills in youth, ensuring a sustainable future for the sector by creating young advocates who view farming as a viable and fulfilling career path.
