What if one invention could make school life easier? For one young learner, the answer was simple: a teleportation device that would make being late for class a thing of the past.
The playful response brought a touch of humor to an interview session on October 23, 2026, during the Community Needs Assessment (CNA) conducted by the Monitoring and Impact Assessment Unit (MIAU), in collaboration with the College of Engineering and Industrial Technology (CEIT), at Good Shepherd’s Fold Academy (GSFA) in Salvacion, Buenavista, Guimaras.
Beyond the laughter, the student’s imaginative answer offered a glimpse into the curiosity and creativity that young learners can bring to conversations about innovation and problem-solving.
The activity aimed to gather insights from the community to help guide the development and enhancement of university extension programs, particularly initiatives that seek to strengthen engineering-related knowledge and skills across the province.
By listening to the experiences, perspectives, and needs of community members, the University seeks to ensure that its extension initiatives are responsive to local realities and aligned with the communities they intend to serve.
Although teleportation remains a concept of science fiction, the curiosity behind the idea reflects the importance of nurturing young people’s imagination, critical thinking, and interest in science and technology. With appropriate educational opportunities and guidance, these qualities can become valuable foundations for addressing real-world challenges.
Through the collaborative efforts of MIAU, CEIT, and the Extension Services Division, the assessment represents an important step toward identifying community needs and exploring opportunities for meaningful, sustainable, and needs-based engineering extension programs in Guimaras.
Ultimately, every great innovation begins with a question, an idea, or even a playful dream. By listening to young learners and the communities they belong to, Guimaras State University continues to explore ways to transform curiosity into opportunities for learning, innovation, and community development.
