As the sun rises over the island province of Guimaras, a new light is set to shine at Guimaras State University (GSU) — one powered by clean, renewable energy. Staying true to its commitment to sustainability and responsible energy use, GSU has taken a decisive step toward green transformation through the installation of solar panels across its campuses.
To bring this initiative to life, the university has earmarked ₱3 million for the installation of solar panels in its campuses. Of this amount, ₱2 million will be allocated for the Main Campus in Buenavista, while ₱500,000 each will be allotted for the Mosqueda Campus in Jordan and the Baterna Campus in San Lorenzo. This investment reflects GSU’s strategic vision to not only embrace renewable energy but also to reduce electricity costs, promote sustainability, and serve as a model of green leadership among higher education institutions in the region.
University President Dr. Lilian Diana B. Parreño emphasized that the solar panel initiative is both an environmental and financial milestone for GSU. “This project represents our strong commitment to sustainability,” she said. “By investing in solar energy, we are reducing our dependence on traditional power sources, lowering operational costs, and setting an example for our students and community to follow.”
Preparations for the installation are now underway, as the university collaborates with energy specialists to design and install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on key buildings across campuses. Once operational, the systems are expected to supply a significant portion of the university’s electricity demand during daytime hours — powering classrooms, offices, and laboratories. The initiative will not only make GSU campuses more energy-efficient but will also help the university reduce its carbon footprint, aligning with the province of Guimaras’s reputation as a coal-free and environmentally conscious province.
Electricity expenses make up a major part of GSU’s annual operational budget. By switching to solar energy, the university anticipates long-term financial savings that can be redirected toward improving educational facilities, research programs, and student services. Beyond the financial aspect, the solar initiative represents a practical application of sustainability education. The solar panels will serve as a real-world learning laboratory for students, particularly those in electrical, engineering, and environmental programs — giving them valuable exposure to the growing renewable energy sector.
Complementing the installation effort, GSU has been conducting seminars and training sessions on solar installation and energy management through partnerships with renewable energy companies. These initiatives aim to build local capacity and ensure that the project benefits not just the university, but also the surrounding communities. The project is envisioned to inspire both students and residents to adopt cleaner, more sustainable energy practices, contributing to Guimaras’s vision of becoming a truly green province.
With ₱3 million dedicated to this pioneering energy project, Guimaras State University is setting the standard for sustainability among state universities in the region. The initiative marks a powerful step toward a future where education, innovation, and environmental stewardship come together. As the university prepares to harness the power of the sun, GSU’s campuses will soon stand as beacons of green transformation — proof that progress and sustainability can go hand in hand. Through this bold solar initiative, GSU is not just saving energy; it is shaping a brighter, cleaner, and more resilient future for Guimaras and beyond.
