Development Skills Training: Rug Making

The Development Skills Training on Rug Making was conducted by the GSU- College of Teacher Education- BTLED on December 6-7, 2023 as part of a broader initiative to equip participants with practical and income-generating skills. Aimed at empowering individuals from various backgrounds, including women, youth, and members of marginalized sectors, the training sought to teach valuable rug making techniques that could serve both personal and economic purposes.

The event started with an introduction to the basic principles of rug making. Participants were guided step by step through the process of selecting materials, designing patterns, and weaving techniques. The hands-on nature of the training allowed each participant to practice these skills under the supervision of experienced trainers. By the end of the session, attendees had successfully created their own handmade rugs, which they could potentially market or use for personal purposes.

Throughout the training, emphasis was placed not only on the technical aspects of rug making but also on the broader economic potential of the craft. Participants were encouraged to explore rug making as a viable business opportunity, particularly given the growing demand for handmade, locally-produced products. The trainers discussed various ways to market their creations, providing practical advice on how to turn their newfound skills into a source of income.

At the conclusion of the event, certificates of participation were awarded to all attendees as recognition of their effort and engagement. Several participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity, noting that the training had given them a valuable skill that could help improve their financial situation.

In summary, the Development Skills Training on Rug Making was a success. It provided participants with practical skills, boosted their confidence, and opened up new economic opportunities. The hands-on experience, combined with discussions about entrepreneurship, made this training an impactful initiative in empowering participants to turn their skills into a sustainable livelihood.
