Guimaras State University (GSU) turned September 30, 2025 into more than just another Tuesday; it became a day of kinship, greenery, and meaningful conversations as the university marked its annual Family Day in tandem with the 125th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary.
Anchored on Proclamation No. 60, s. 1992, which designates the last week of September as National Family Week, the celebration highlighted two pillars that ground society: the family and public service. The joint event reflected GSU’s belief that nurturing both creates stronger communities and a more resilient academic institution.
The morning program began at the Student Activity Center, where faculty, staff, and their families gathered in a spirit of togetherness. University President Dr. Lilian Diana B. Parreño welcomed the attendees, reminding everyone that family is at the heart of both personal life and public service—urging them to embrace the day as a chance to reconnect and recharge.
The celebration soon shifted outdoors as participants visited the newly donated Lopez Campus for a symbolic tree planting activity. In partnership with several Lions Clubs from Iloilo and Guimaras, the effort embodied a shared commitment to sustainability—planting roots not only for trees, but for future generations who will benefit from them.
Returning to the main campus, the atmosphere shifted to a livelier mood as sports and fun games brought the grounds to life. From friendly basketball games to team-building challenges, the activities reminded participants that work-life balance thrives when camaraderie, laughter, and play are given space to grow.
The afternoon’s reflective counterpart came through a Mental Health Forum facilitated by Ms. Carla Joy H. Gaitano, Nurse II. She highlighted stress management, emotional resilience, and the value of nurturing supportive relationships—timely messages in a fast-paced environment where mental well-being is often overlooked.
More than a commemoration, GSU’s Family Day stood as a meaningful blend of purpose and celebration—honoring tradition while nurturing new initiatives, valuing public service while affirming family as the nation’s core, and balancing fun with reflections on wellness and sustainability.
