Guimaras State University (GSU), through its Innovation Technology Support Office (ITSO), Intellectual Property Management Office (IPMO), and ISLA-TBI, launched a 6-day training series on Intellectual Property (IP) Awareness, Design Thinking, and Patent Search Strategies across its three campuses this May 2025.

The activity, conducted in coordination with the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, and Training (VPRETI), ran from May 14–15 at Salvador Campus, May 21–22 at Mosqueda Campus, and May 28–29 at Baterna Campus. It aimed to strengthen the university’s innovation ecosystem and enhance IP knowledge among student researchers, faculty members, and aspiring technopreneurs.

The training focused on three core components: Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), Design Thinking, and Patent Search Strategies. Participants were introduced to the basics of IP protection, the process of developing user-centered solutions, and the conduct of prior art searches essential to patent application and innovation validation.
According to organizers, the initiative was part of GSU’s efforts to build capacity in research and innovation aligned with national development goals and CHED’s directives for HEIs to inspire innovation-led growth.

The training series also complements the mandate of the ITSO under the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) to institutionalize IP protection and commercialization efforts in state universities and colleges.
Key facilitators from the university’s innovation units provided hands-on workshops, equipping attendees with practical skills needed to advance academic outputs into patentable and market-ready solutions.

GSU officials stated that similar capacity-building activities will be sustained in future semesters to create a more IP-conscious and innovation-driven academic community.
