GSU-CTE Strengthens Early Literacy Instruction through Training on Phonemic Awareness and Beginning Reading

The College of Teacher Education (CTE) of Guimaras State University successfully conducted a two-day extension activity titled “Mula sa Tunog: Mga Istratehiya at Gawain sa Pagtuturo ng Panimulang Pagbasa” on March 12–13, 2025 at the National Child Development Center (NCDC) in New Poblacion, Buenavista, Guimaras.

The training aimed to enhance the competencies of Child Development Workers (CDWs) in teaching phonemic awareness and foundational reading skills to early learners. Designed to bridge theory and practice, the sessions featured in-depth discussions and interactive workshops facilitated by education specialists from GSU-CTE. Participants were introduced to a range of strategies and materials development techniques to cultivate literacy readiness among young children.

The participants’ active engagement became a highlight of the program, as CDWs expressed enthusiasm about developing big books and other instructional tools for use in their respective centers. Their commitment reflected a shared goal of improving literacy learning experiences in early childhood settings.

The initiative was warmly received by local partners. Ms. Nancy Calamba, head of NCDC Buenavista, expressed her gratitude for the collaboration and emphasized the training’s relevance to improving instructional quality in child development centers. Ms. Josephine De Asis, GSU-CTE Extension Coordinator, likewise extended appreciation to NCDC and the Local Government Unit of Buenavista for their hospitality and support in realizing the activity.
