CST Cybercrime Symposium Opening

The College of Science and Technology (CST) of Guimaras State University, in collaboration with Good Shepherd’s Fold Incorporated, conducted a Symposium on RA 10175 – Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 attended by 157 learners and teachers. The event aimed to strengthen digital literacy and promote responsible online behavior among the youth.

Held on March 5, 2025, the symposium discussed the salient features and implications of Republic Act No. 10175, commonly known as the “Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.” The activity was graced by Dr. Reiner Jun G. Alminaza, CST Extension Coordinator; Prof. Divon G. Tamdang, Program Head of BSIT; Instr. Alfred John G. Borreros, the resource speaker; Mary Llourane Faith Jornadal, CST staff; and students from The Nexus Media.

The symposium commenced with an opening message from Mrs. Herminia Reyes, School Principal of Good Shepherd’s Fold Inc., who emphasized the importance of digital safety and awareness of cyber laws. Dr. Alminaza provided an overview of the symposium’s objectives, highlighting the significance of responsible online behavior among students.

Instr. Alfred John G. Borreros provided an in-depth discussion on the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, covering:

  • Cybercrime offenses such as hacking, identity theft, cyber libel, and online fraud
  • Legal consequences and penalties for cyber-related violations
  • Best practices for safe and responsible internet use

Participants actively engaged in an interactive Q&A session where they raised concerns about cyber threats, online privacy, and digital rights. The discussion addressed misconceptions and offered practical strategies to safeguard personal and institutional data online.

The event concluded with words of encouragement from Prof. Divon G. Tamdang, Program Head of BSIT and Project Leader, who emphasized the vital role of the youth in promoting cybersecurity awareness. He extended his appreciation to Mrs. Herminia Reyes, the teaching staff of Good Shepherd’s Fold Inc., and Instr. Borreros for their valuable contributions to the success of the event.

Overall, the symposium achieved its objectives of educating and engaging participants on the critical issue of cybercrime prevention. The knowledge shared by Instr. Borreros is expected to help students and educators foster a safer and more responsible digital environment.
