On October 9, 2024, the Guimaras State University (GSU) hosted the first Guimaras Research Conference as part of the Guimaras Data Festival in conjunction with the 35th National Statistics Month Celebration, with the theme “Data-driven Development: Empowering Guimaras through Research and Development” on the 3rd Floor, AVR, Graduate School Building. Several agencies from the public and private sectors, government officials, educators, and students attended this event.
Dr. Lilian Diana B. Parreño, University President of GSU, delivered the opening remarks. During her speech, she acknowledged the various agencies, guests, and spectators and stated that she was honored to host this event because the university’s vision is to be a premier university in education, green technology, innovations, and community transformations by 2040. She stated that this conference is an essential venue for exchanging knowledge and ideas that will shape policy and practices in crucial areas such as agriculture, environmental protection, tourism, health, and education. Dr. Parreño emphasized that this conference aims to connect higher education, local government, and the community through collaboration, innovation, and shared purpose. She concluded her message with the statement, “Let us work together to empower Guimaras, fueled by research and driven by innovation.”
Following that, Ms. Lovelia G. Gamo, Assistant Provincial Planning and Development Coordinator for the province of Guimaras, represented Hon. JC Rahman A. Nava, Governor of the province. In his statement, he underlined the importance of data and statistics in decision-making, governance, business, education, and other areas. He went on to emphasize that we will use this research conference as a platform to enhance and showcase innovative ideas that will form the basis for our actions across diverse fields. Hon. Nava concluded with the following statement, “Let this congress serve as a springboard for future collaboration in order to bridge the gap between areas of discipline and areas of governance.”
Following that, Dr. Julius T. Vergara, Vice President for Research, Extension, Training, and Innovation, introduced the participants and read the mechanics. He also acknowledged the participants for the poster-making exhibit.
There were 11 studies presented, the majority of which focused on agriculture and its importance in the province of Guimaras. Some of the studies presented include strengthening the scholarship program, policy implications for improving linkages between Iloilo City and the Province of Guimaras, a socioeconomic study of the Igang watershed, an assessment of faculty productivity and graduate success, and financial literacy among small-scale farmers.
With these research findings given, they can be deemed useful for the province’s development and will not only determine the path of our beloved province but will also provide vital insights that can inspire other communities and urge us forward.
