GSU CAgS Empowers DCGNMHS Youth Through Agri-Fishery Skills Training

Agri-Fishery Training

To cultivate the next generation of farmers and promote activities responsive to SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, the Guimaras State University College of Agricultural Sciences (GSU CAgS) partnered with Dr. Catalino G. Nava Memorial High School (DCGNMHS) to conduct a 10-Day Agri-Fishery Skills Training from April 12–26, 2024, at the GSU Baterna Campus Activity Center. This initiative was part of the GSU Community Extension Services Project, “In-School Youth Empowerment through Engagement in Agricultural Enterprises.”

During the program, selected DCGNMHS students received training on a variety of agri-fishery skills and competencies, delivered by GSU CAgS faculty members. Prof. Rhea Joy D. Flora led training sessions on organic concoctions and extracts; Instr. Reynro T. Herrera guided participants in crafting business model canvases; Instr. Jelle Cabaling covered organic vegetable production, crop propagation, and harvest management; Prof. Gerald Sheo Thon Gamo taught pond management; and Instr. Clarisse Marte and Instr. Ma. Angie Deano instructed students in bangus deboning. Instr. Erma T. Conde provided insights into poultry and livestock management, production, and feed formulation. Each session began with lectures and was followed by hands-on activities to reinforce learning.

The training concluded with participants sharing their impressions, with one trainee expressing that the 10-day program had instilled a deep passion for farming and helped them embrace their roles in a farming community. This initiative not only provided valuable skills but also encouraged a sense of pride and purpose among the youth, preparing them for future success in the agricultural sector.
