Guimaras State University held a youth training session on bangus (milkfish) deboning on April 5, 2024, as part of the Youth Empowerment in Agribusiness and Sustainable Agri-fishery Program (YEASAP). Hosted at the university’s Baterna Campus Multicrop Pond, the event provided students from Dr. Catalino G. Nava Memorial High School with practical skills in food preparation and fishery practices, focusing on the local staple, bangus.
Led by instructors Clarisse Marte and Ma. Ange Deano, the training covered essential techniques for efficient deboning, including safe fish handling, precise bone extraction, hygiene practices, and methods to minimize waste. This program aimed to support the sustainable development goal of “Zero Hunger” by empowering youth with culinary and agribusiness skills that uphold local traditions while enhancing opportunities in sustainable agriculture.
Participants engaged in hands-on deboning exercises to apply what they had learned, preparing them for both household and entrepreneurial applications. The training concluded with certificates awarded to all attendees and facilitators, recognizing their dedication to community growth and sustainable agribusiness in Guimaras.
