In a significant move to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment, the Office of Gender and Development (OGD) at Guimaras State University (GSU) successfully hosted a talk on Republic Act No. 9710, also known as the Magna Carta of Women, on March 13, 2024, at the Agri-Eco Convention Hall.
The event, which began at 8:00 AM, brought together faculty and staff members from various departments of GSU to engage in a comprehensive discussion on the law’s provisions, which seek to uphold and protect the rights of women in various sectors, including education, employment, health, politics, and social services.
Dr. Lilian Diana B. Parreño, the University President, issued a memorandum mandating the attendance of all permanent GSU personnel, reinforcing the university’s commitment to the goals of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5: Gender Equality. This is in alignment with GSU’s dedication to fostering a gender-inclusive environment where women’s rights are celebrated, and opportunities for empowerment are accessible to all.
The talk focused on the significance of RA 9710 in improving women’s access to education and employment, ensuring equitable health services, enhancing political participation, and providing support in social welfare systems. Experts from the Office of Gender and Development led the discussion, offering insights into the Magna Carta’s impact on institutional policies and its relevance in achieving gender equality within the university and beyond.
By organizing this event, GSU reaffirmed its stance on gender equality and underscored the importance of laws that protect and empower women in all facets of society. The talk also served as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to align the university’s policies with SDG 5, contributing to a more just and equal community.
Through its active engagement in such initiatives, GSU continues to play a vital role in advocating for women’s rights, ensuring that all personnel are equipped with the knowledge to support a gender-equal environment in their respective professional fields.
This successful event was one of many planned to raise awareness and foster a culture of gender inclusivity across the university, providing a platform for continued dialogue and growth towards gender equality.
