March 11, 2024 – Guimaras State University (GSU) officially kicked off its 2024 Women’s Month Celebration today with a vibrant and meaningful event, following the flag ceremony. The celebration, held in honor of National Women’s Month, aimed to highlight the significant contributions of women to the community, society, and the world at large.
This year’s theme, “WE for Gender Equality and an Inclusive Society”, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing advancement of women’s rights and will guide the celebration through 2028. The theme emphasizes collective action for gender equality, inclusivity, and empowerment for women in all walks of life.
In her memorandum addressed to all personnel and students, GSU University President Dr. Lilian Diana B. Parreño called on the university community to participate actively in the festivities. As part of the kickoff activity, all permanent GSU personnel were encouraged to wear the university’s violet Gender and Development (GAD) polo shirt, symbolizing unity and support for the cause. Faculty, staff, and students of the College of Social Sciences (COS) were also invited to don violet-colored t-shirts, further demonstrating solidarity in the celebration of women’s achievements.
The event served as a reminder of the critical role that gender equality plays in the development of a more just and inclusive society. GSU’s commitment to advancing women’s rights is not only reflected in today’s celebration but also in its continued efforts to promote equality and inclusivity within the academic environment.
The Women’s Month activities, which will continue throughout March, align with the global goals of Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) – Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. GSU’s participation in this global initiative reflects its dedication to fostering an environment where women are recognized, supported, and empowered to thrive.
The university community is looking forward to a month full of activities that aim to further the conversation around gender equality, ensuring that women’s voices are heard and valued, and ultimately contributing to the creation of an inclusive society for all.
