Guimaras State University (GSU), through its College of Teacher Education, conducted a two-day language comprehension workshop titled PABAUNI (“Pakinggan, Basahin, Unawain at Ipaliwanag”) in Barangay San Nicolas, Buenavista, Guimaras, on January 17-18, 2024. This initiative is part of the Paghasa program, which aims to improve vocabulary and reading comprehension skills among participants, thereby promoting quality education in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4).
The event began with a prayer led by Instr. Agusto Yanguas, followed by a welcome speech from Instr. Adora B. Gabayoyo. A significant moment of the workshop was the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between Barangay San Nicolas and GSU, represented by Barangay Captain Raymund Gatinao and Prof. Margie Y. De La Cruz, GSU’s Director of Community Extension Services. This collaboration emphasizes GSU’s commitment to fostering educational development in local communities.
The program commenced with a diagnostic test to assess participants’ initial comprehension levels, followed by interactive sessions focused on vocabulary building and comprehension skills, led by Prof. Nelson Rodriguez. Instr. French Marie Bicane facilitated a Q&A activity that encouraged participants to analyze and interpret text details. These hands-on activities not only enhanced participants’ language skills but also promoted collaboration and critical thinking.
Feedback from participants indicated that the training was invaluable. The exercises significantly improved their vocabulary and comprehension abilities, which are essential for effective communication and a deeper understanding of the Filipino language. This workshop exemplifies GSU’s dedication to providing quality education and lifelong learning opportunities, contributing to the broader educational goals outlined in SDG 4.
Through initiatives like the PABAUNI workshop, GSU is taking meaningful steps to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education, thereby empowering communities and fostering a culture of learning.
