
The College of Science and Technology at Guimaras State University (GSU) held a training session on software and productivity tools last December 23, 2023 at New Poblacion, Buenavista, Guimaras, focusing on Microsoft Word, for residents of Barangay New Poblacion. This initiative underscores GSU’s commitment to promoting quality education as outlined in Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
The event commenced with an opening prayer presented via multimedia, followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. Hon. Donald Tamdang, Barangay Captain, delivered inspiring opening remarks that created a positive atmosphere for learning and emphasized the value of education in empowering the community.

Dr. Margie Y. de la Cruz, Director of Community Extension Services, reinforced the importance of community welfare and computer literacy in her message, highlighting how access to technology and education can transform lives and build a more informed society.
A key highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between GSU and Barangay New Poblacion, solidifying their commitment to collaborative initiatives that promote community development and educational advancement. This partnership aims to enhance the quality of education within the community, ensuring that residents have the skills necessary to thrive in a digital world.

Dr. Reiner Jun G. Alminaza, the CST Coordinator, led the training, covering essential topics related to Microsoft Word, including basic document formatting, organization, data management, and graphics. His comprehensive approach provided participants with valuable skills to create professional documents, thereby enhancing their overall productivity and employability.
To assess their learning progress, participants completed a pre-test before the training and a post-test afterward. The engaging and practical insights from Dr. Alminaza’s session are expected to significantly improve the participants’ document management skills. By equipping community members with essential technological skills, GSU and Barangay New Poblacion are fostering a spirit of shared responsibility and community engagement, contributing to the overarching goal of quality education for all.
