The College of Teacher Education at Guimaras State University conducted a two-day activity on December 13-14, 2023, at Sitio Sirum, Barangay San Nicholas, focused on the living traditions of the Ati community. This event not only celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the Ati people but also highlighted the importance of quality education in preserving these traditions for future generations, in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4).
On the first day, participants, including Ati elders, registered and gathered in the community area with assistance from local officials and health workers. Rey Arturo led discussions emphasizing the significance of preserving living traditions, particularly the role of education in fostering understanding and appreciation of cultural practices. He articulated how integrating these traditions into educational curricula can enhance the quality of education and promote lifelong learning opportunities.
The second day featured formal interviews and showcases of existing living traditions within the community, allowing participants to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. This interactive format not only empowered the Ati elders but also served as a vital educational tool for the youth, instilling a sense of pride and responsibility in safeguarding their cultural heritage. The event fostered a strong sense of motivation and participation among the Ati elders, who expressed eagerness to pass on their cultural heritage to the youth.
The initiative underscored the importance of cultural preservation as a cornerstone of quality education and the pivotal role of the College of Teacher Education in supporting the Ati community’s traditions. By promoting education that values and incorporates local cultures, Guimaras State University is actively contributing to the realization of SDG 4, ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education that empowers all learners.
