4H Club Members Trains in Mango Bagging and Safety Procedures

The practice of mango bagging is crucial for ensuring successful mango production in the Province of Guimaras. However, a declining workforce in this area poses significant challenges to the region’s mango industry. To address this concern and for the attainment of the SDG 8 of the United Nations for Decent Work and Economic Growth, the Guimaras State University (GSU) College of Agricultural Sciences and the Mango and Tropical Fruits Research Center, in partnership with the Bureau of Plant Industry, initiated a training session focused on Mango Bagging and Safety Procedures at the GSU Baterna Campus last December 13, 2023.

The training aimed to enhance the capabilities of 4H Club members by providing comprehensive instruction on scientifically proven bagging techniques. The GSU College of Agricultural Sciences hosted the event, inviting two resource speakers from the Bureau of Plant Industry: Engr. Rhod Orquia and Mr. Roland Galon. They delivered insightful presentations on the importance of bagging, proper techniques, the materials involved, and necessary safety procedures.

Following the discussions, participants engaged in hands-on activities that allowed them to practice correct mango bagging methods. Some participants also volunteered to apply safety procedures on actual mango trees.

The one-day training concluded with closing remarks from the Extension Coordinator, Instructor Reynro T. Herrera, who expressed gratitude for the success of the event and emphasized the importance of the training in supporting the local mango industry.
