GSU CBM Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management Provides Housekeeping Training for DSWD RRCY Residents

The Guimaras State University (GSU) College of Business and Management (CBM) Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management (THM) recently extended its community outreach by conducting a two-day housekeeping training for residents of the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Regional Rehabilitation Center for the Youth (RRCY) in Concordia Sur, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras. This initiative is part of the ongoing collaboration between GSU and RRCY, established in 2021, to positively impact the lives of Children in Conflict with the Law (CICL) through skill-building programs and values education.

Held from September 25-26, 2023, the training was organized at the request of RRCY Head Ms. Haydee C. Canilla. The program was designed to equip residents with essential housekeeping skills that could aid in both their personal development and potential employment opportunities in the hospitality sector. This endeavor aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 8, which promotes “Decent Work and Economic Growth.”

Led by THM faculty, staff, and students, the training included hands-on demonstrations and practice sessions. Prof. Maychelle P. Sorongon, THM Extension Coordinator, provided a highlight demonstration on towel folding techniques commonly used in bed making and housekeeping. The participants then engaged in return demonstrations, allowing them to practice and refine their skills.

Through this training, GSU CBM THM Department aims to empower RRCY residents with practical skills for use in both domestic and commercial settings, contributing to their rehabilitation process and preparation for reintegration into society.
