GSU Hosts Milkfish Nursery Production Training and Dispersal

Guimaras State University (GSU), through its College of Agricultural Sciences at the Baterna Campus, successfully conducted a Milkfish Nursery Production (Garungan) Technology Presentation and Dispersal on September 20, 2023. The event was organized in collaboration with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 6 (BFAR-6), the Guimaras Provincial Fisheries Office (PFO), and the Provincial Office of Agricultural Services (POAS) to promote sustainable aquaculture practices and enhance milkfish production in the region.

The training and demonstration event aimed to equip local fisherfolk, pond operators, and fisheries students with essential knowledge and skills in milkfish nursery management. The initiative also coincided with the Celebration of Fish Conservation Week led by BFAR-6.

The event featured various segments designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. The event commenced with a warm welcome from Dr. Julius T. Vergara, Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences at GSU, who emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing the agricultural and fisheries sector in Guimaras.

Key officials also shared their messages during the event. Mr. Mateo C. Doyola, Jr., OIC-PFO of Guimaras, highlighted the significance of Fish Conservation Week and BFAR-6’s initiatives to support sustainable fisheries. Mr. Ramon Marañon, PAFC Chair, provided insights into the plans and activities of the Provincial Agricultural and Fisheries Council (PAFC).

Experts delivered informative technical presentations on milkfish nursery management. Mr. Jhyke Martirez (BFAR-6) provided background on the Garungan Project. Prof. Gerald Sheo Thon Gamo, Pond Manager of GSU Multi-Crop Pond, conducted lectures on Milkfish Nursery Management, Pond Preparation and Water Quality Management, Feeding and Nutrition for Milkfish Fingerlings, and Disease Management and Prevention. These presentations provided valuable insights into modern techniques and best practices in milkfish nursery production, benefiting pond operators and BS in Fisheries students from GSU-Baterna Campus.

A practical demonstration was held at the GSU Multi-Crop Pond, where participants engaged in hands-on activities such as feeding, stocking, and monitoring water quality parameters. This interactive session allowed attendees to apply the knowledge gained from the presentations.

The event concluded with a Ceremonial Fingerlings Dispersal, where key university officials, partner agencies, and guests participated in a symbolic dispersal of milkfish fingerlings, marking the success of the initiative.

The Milkfish Nursery Production Training and Dispersal underscored GSU’s commitment to empowering fisherfolk and students with practical knowledge in aquaculture. By providing training and access to technology, the university and its partner agencies aim to strengthen sustainable fisheries management in Guimaras, ensuring long-term benefits for the local industry and community. This initiative reaffirms the role of academic institutions in bridging research, technology, and community development, fostering growth in the fisheries sector.
