GSU-CST Conducts Mastering Microsoft Office Suite Training

On September 4, 2023, Guimaras State University – College of Science and Technology (GSU-CST) hosted a training program focused on mastering the Microsoft Office Suite, attended by 29 personnel from the Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth (RRCY). This initiative aligns with the goals of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which emphasizes the importance of inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all.

The program began with an opening prayer, followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem through multimedia, and opening remarks from Dr. Reiner Jun G. Alminaza, CST Extension Coordinator. Dr. Alminaza highlighted the significance of equipping individuals with essential digital skills, essential for thriving in today’s technology-driven world.

The training kicked off with a session on Microsoft Word, led by Dr. Lea P. Ymalay, Program Head of BS Computer Science and BS Information Systems. Participants explored both fundamental and advanced features of Word, learning how to create and format professional-quality documents. Key topics included styles, headers, footers, and collaborative editing, which equipped attendees with valuable skills for producing reports, letters, and other communications. This training not only fosters professional development but also supports the educational framework of SDG 4 by enhancing literacy and communication skills.

In the afternoon, Dr. Rodney N. Martires conducted a comprehensive session on Microsoft Excel. He effectively guided participants through the foundational aspects of Excel, from spreadsheet navigation to formula mastery. His engaging presentation included practical tips on data management, charts, graphs, and visualization techniques, helping attendees understand Excel’s powerful capabilities for problem-solving and decision-making. The skills acquired in this session are vital for fostering analytical thinking and effective data usage, contributing to informed decision-making processes.

On September 5, Dr. Ymalay returned to lead a session on Microsoft PowerPoint. She provided an in-depth exploration of the software, covering essential features like slide creation, multimedia integration, and design principles. Dr. Ymalay’s dynamic teaching style included practical demonstrations and encouraged participant interaction, fostering a collaborative learning environment. Attendees learned to transform static slides into engaging narratives, mastering advanced features such as animations and transitions. This emphasis on presentation skills enhances not only personal development but also the ability to convey information effectively in various professional contexts.

The interactive nature of the workshop allowed participants to share screens, seek feedback, and collaborate on challenges, enriching the overall learning experience. By the end of the training, participants emerged with enhanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, ready to apply their newfound knowledge in their professional roles.

This comprehensive training not only streamlined personal workflows but also positioned attendees as valuable assets in collaborative work environments. The successful execution of this program underscores GSU-CST’s commitment to continuous learning and professional development, empowering participants to thrive in their careers. By promoting such educational initiatives, GSU-CST actively contributes to achieving SDG 4, ensuring that quality education is accessible and beneficial for all.
