Hopping Toward Sustainability: GSU Empowers Youth with Rabbitry Skills for Resilient Agriculture and Income Growth

GSU Rabbitry Training

On May 25, 2023, Guimaras State University-Baterna Campus, through its 4-H Club, held a training session on rabbitry aimed at equipping youth with sustainable agricultural skills. Coordinated by GSU Community Extension Services and the College of Agricultural Sciences, the event focused on re-establishing income-generating activities for the 4-H Club, which had been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The training began with opening remarks from Extension Coordinator Instructor Reynro Herrera and motivational insights from Dr. Julius Vergara, Dean and Campus Director. The program featured two main sessions. The first, led by Mr. Seth Gromia, introduced participants to rabbitry fundamentals, including breed selection and management practices. Miss Angelyn Jalondoni followed with a practical demonstration on feed management and rabbit care. Mr. Jayson Dela China and Miss Jocerie Genioda, owners of Green Rabbitry, shared insights on value-added ventures in rabbit products, including cooking demonstrations and recipes that engaged participants.

An open forum allowed participants to interact with trainers and deepen their understanding. The overwhelmingly positive feedback highlighted the practical benefits gained, with certificates of appreciation awarded to both attendees and resource persons. This training marks an important step in empowering youth with valuable agricultural skills and contributing to the revitalization of the 4-H Club’s initiatives. Furthermore, the extension activity aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, such as Zero Hunger, Responsible Consumption and Production, Partnerships for the Goals, and Life on Land.
