The College of Agricultural Sciences (CAgS) spearheaded an extension activity entitled “African Swine Fever (ASF) and Bird Flu Awareness Symposium” on March 31, 2023 at DASIVGAI, Dasal, Sibunag, Guimaras, attended by 47 members of the Dasal Sibunag Vegetable Growers Association, Inc. (DASIVGAI).

The primary objective of this activity is to find out and address disease detection and prevention practices for African Swine Fever (ASF) and Bird Flu. It was officially opened by Instructor Reynro T. Herrera, CAgS Extension Coordinator, who offered opening remarks and greeted everyone. This was followed by Dr. Julius T. Vergara, CAgS Dean, who delivered an inspirational message.

One of the lecturers, Dr. Vergara, spoke about African Swine Fever. He discussed the indications and symptoms of ASF, how to prevent it, and the virus’s mode of transmission. Erma T. Conde, CAgS faculty member, spoke about Bird Flu, its history, epidemiology, casual organisms, signs and symptoms, and preventive methods.

Mr. Noli Gajete, President of DASIVGAI, and Mr. Karl Nino Ginete, members of the organization, provided feedback on the activity. They were grateful for the knowledge shared by the lecturers to them and they hoped for further seminars and training to be conducted in their organization.

By enhancing the capacity of DASIVGAI members to protect their livestock, the university fosters resilient agricultural practices and contributes to the sustainable development of the local agricultural sector. This initiative reflects GSU’s dedication to promoting food security, safeguarding livelihoods, and supporting environmental stewardship.
