The “Save the Marine Ecosystem” (Save ME) Project, funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and implemented by Guimaras State University (GSU), is a student-led, community-focused initiative dedicated to marine conservation. At its core, the project utilizes a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3Rs) strategy with a strong focus on circular economy principles. This approach aims to establish a solid waste management program on campus and within the local community, fostering an eco-friendly culture among faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders. The Save ME Project not only addresses waste reduction but also seeks to develop sustainable habits, instilling a sense of environmental responsibility through educational advocacy, greening activities, and innovative student-led projects. Save ME emphasizes research and practical application, generating valuable data on solid waste management, particularly in plastic waste recycling. GSU students, in collaboration with local communities, take an active role in these activities, promoting waste reduction and environmental stewardship across the island. An impact assessment following project implementation will evaluate the effectiveness of Save ME, providing insights into how community-driven, research-informed projects can create lasting ecological change in Guimaras and serve as a model for similar initiatives elsewhere.
