Empowering Communities through Organic Agriculture: A Holistic Approach to Livelihood and Spiritual Growth
Posted on
In a collaborative effort to promote sustainable livelihoods and community development, the College of Agricultural Sciences is launching a series of training programs focused on Organic Fertilizer and Vegetable Production cum Plant Propagation. This initiative is made possible through a partnership with the Potato Systems Research and Training Center, Inc. (PSRTC) and the Guimaras Foursquare Gospel Church, blending agricultural innovation with community empowerment.
The PSRTC, a leading research and training institute, is known for its dedication to equipping communities with skills and resources for sustainable livelihood development. Meanwhile, the Guimaras Foursquare Gospel Church, based in San Miguel, Jordan, Guimaras, is committed to fostering spiritual growth. Together, these organizations are spearheading the Guimaras Livelihood Empowerment Program (GLEP), a groundbreaking initiative formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement on January 25, 2021. GLEP embodies a holistic approach to community development, addressing both spiritual and economic needs. While the church provides spiritual guidance, PSRTC focuses on livelihood programs designed to uplift families and communities.
Recognizing the transformative potential of GLEP, PSRTC, represented by its director, Dr. Victoria Demonteverde, invited the College of Agricultural Sciences to join the program. With this partnership, a series of capacity-building activities have been conducted to empower beneficiaries with essential agricultural skills. These training sessions have already inspired participants to explore opportunities for livelihood expansion. Encouraged by the progress, Dr. Demonteverde has proposed the introduction of capitalization support for those interested in feed production—a venture that promises to enhance family income and promote self-sufficiency.
The envisioned initiative would see beneficiaries become producers of organic feed, either for their swine and poultry enterprises or for local markets. To support this endeavor, the Training on Organic Feed Formulation and Utilization has been proposed, aiming to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to innovate and succeed in this emerging industry.
The partnership between the College of Agricultural Sciences, PSRTC, and the Guimaras Foursquare Gospel Church showcases the power of collaboration in addressing the multifaceted needs of communities. By integrating agricultural training with spiritual development, GLEP not only empowers individuals economically but also fosters a deeper sense of community and purpose.
As this initiative unfolds, it promises to create a ripple effect, uplifting lives, enhancing agricultural practices, and building a model for holistic community development. Through programs like GLEP, Guimaras State University and its partners continue to champion the cause of sustainable progress, one community at a time.
